18-07-2015   ADULT ACNE MYTH #3: ARE HORMONES TO BLAME FOR CHIN PIMPLES?

By Sia  |  Category :

Lots of people that suffer from acne around the chin believe that it’s directly caused by a hormonal imbalance. This is only somewhat true – as with all pimples, there are many reasons why we get breakouts around our chin, and hormones are just one of them. Generally, breakouts found on the sides of the mouth (just above the chin) are linked with hormonal imbalances, whereas blemishes found directly on and in the middle of the chin are linked with poor diet and gut health.

Learn more about the factors that lead to pimples and skin blemish:

  1. Poor diet

Most of the blemishes found on the chin are linked to your diet, digestive difficulties and its effects on your small intestine.. If your body is struggling to digest refined or processed foods and excess sugars, it’s evident on your skin – particularly around the chin. By cutting back on processed foods and incorporating more fruit and vegetables into your diet, you can help restore intestinal balance. Herbal teas and an increased fibre intake can also help aid your body’s digestion.

  1. Food allergies

Acne on the chin may also be a sign that you are allergic or intolerant to particular types of food, ranging from eggs to dairy or gluten. If you do think a specific food is affecting your skin, try cutting it out for two weeks and see if you notice any difference in your skin’s behaviour.

  1. Make up

As we’ve talked about in previous blog posts, not all make up is created equal! Mineral makeup is always preferable, especially for acne prone skin types. It is non-comedogenic, which means it doesn’t clog your pores – reducing your chance of breakouts.

  1. Touching your face

Do you lean on your chin or stroke it whilst in deep thought?  These simple movements can cause pimples to spread.  Resist the urge to touch your face excessively and always sanitise your hands to make sure you’re not spreading bacteria. Simple!
