20-06-2015   Meet Merna Khoury – Mineral Makeup Tips

Many of our clients admit they’re really not sure what to think when it comes to mineral makeup! They’ve sussed out how conventional formulas work on their skin, and might have heard that mineral makeup is better for skin health and protection… but they’re not sure why.

I sat down with Merna Khoury, a You By Sia Skin Therapist at the Castle Hill clinic, to get her thoughts on the most common questions she gets on mineral makeup – and her answers!

Why Choose Mineral Makeup Instead Of Conventional Makeup?

The list is endless! Mineral makeup consists purely of natural minerals and pigments, making it a totally natural alternative that’s free of ingredients that harm or clog the skin.

Mineral makeup is perfect for oily and acne-prone skin, and is non-comedogenic – meaning it won’t clog pores or cause breakouts.

Mineral makeup foundations and powders are also ‘physical sunscreens’, which is beneficial to all skin types. This is especially true for acne-prone skin, because it uses physical barriers like zinc to reflect the sun’s UV rays. Natural ingredients like mica also make mineral makeup a great option for sensitive and easily irritated skin types, recognised as one of few ingredients which provide colour and cover-up in a natural form, it’s even safe to use immediately after skin treatments like skin needling and inside out peels.

However, not all mineral makeup is created equally. To ensure you’re buying and using a high-quality product, look for mineral makeup formulas that incorporate mica, zinc or titanium dioxide, and avoid the use of ‘fillers’. These take the form of fragrances, colours, binders, preservatives and other chemicals.

Is Applying Mineral Makeup Different From Applying Conventional Makeup?

It all depends on how you are applying your current make-up. Mineral makeup is different to traditional makeup in that it tends to come in powder form, instead of a liquid or cream (all apart from lipstick, of course!). I often advise my clients that when applying mineral makeup, a small amount goes a long way!

Here are some simple tips for applying mineral makeup:

Tools:

  • Serum & SPF
  • Mineral Foundation, Concealer & Blush
  • Kabuki Brush x 2
  • Lipstick & Lip Brush

Skin Prep: Your makeup only looks as good as the skin beneath it, so a clean, blank canvas is essential! Prep your clean skin with a serum suited to your skin type, followed by a mineral SPF to keep your skin protected. Once both layers have absorbed into the skin, you can begin applying your mineral makeup…

Cover up & Blush: Using your first kabuki brush, twirl it round the foundation dome and ensure the brush is coated in product. Next, tap off any excess powder from the brush to ensure consistent coverage. Blend evenly all over the face – starting from the middle and then outwards, towards the jawline and forehead.

For any imperfections, use the same twirl and tap technique with your concealer powder instead, specifically targeting the areas which need extra cover..

Once your makeup is consistently blended all over your skin, take your second kabuki brush and apply a light tint of blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Lipstick: To add a pop of colour to your look and a hint of moisture to your lips, apply a hydrating mineral lipstick to finish. This can be perfected by using a lip brush.
