How To Prepare For Laser Hair Removal And Maintain Results
When I start working on a treatment, whether for clients or for myself – I like to see a job well done. There are a number of ways to prepare for laser hair removal in the lead up to your treatment, as well afterwards to maintain optimal results.
In this blog post we discuss how to prepare and maintain your skin before and after laser hair removal. You should generally start preparing for your treatment approximately 4 weeks before your first appointment.
• Should I avoid the sun before treatment?
It is a well-known fact that laser hair removal performs best on pale skin and dark hair. Baring this in mind, it is recommended that you keep the treatment area covered and protected for 4 weeks before you begin your laser. This not only reduces the risk of sun damage in the area, but your chances of developing a tan too. Tanning products are not advised throughout laser treatment.
• Can I wax or pluck my hair before treatment?
Any waxing, plucking and electrolysis is to be avoided before and during laser hair removal treatment, all of the process’s mentioned work by removing the hair follicles which will cause the laser treatments to become ineffective.
• Will it hurt?
During your initial consultation we can discuss any discomfort associated with the treatment. Although the majority of our clients do not find laser hair removal painful, a few have compared the sensation to a light ‘flicking’, certainly nothing in comparison to waxing!
• When should I stop shaving before laser hair removal?
You are allowed to shave or trim the hair up until the day you start treatment. Shaving removes the hair whilst keeping the hair follicle intact, giving the laser a clearer shot at removing the follicle.
• Can I still wear deodorant or perfume? On the day of your laser hair removal appointment, depending on the location of your treatment, you should avoid wearing any deodorant, perfume or moisturiser. There are specific preparatory devices or gels which will be applied before or during your treatment.
• Take care of your skin!
Now that your skin is healthy and fuzz free, you want to keep it that way. Sunscreen, antioxidants and moisturizer are essential as many antioxidants work to repair damaged skin and protect it, preventing the skin from future damage.
• Keep an eye out
Once you have completed your 8-10 sessions, you may notice a few random hairs appear over the following 6 months, if so simply book in for a top up appointment if and when needs be. Our clients tend to pop back twice a year for top ups.
